Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) Evaluation and Treatment

Some individuals are unable to use their voice to communicate or benefit from supplementary aids or devices to maximize their communication output. AAC is defined by ASHA as "all forms of communication (other than oral speech) that are used to express thoughts, needs, wants, and ideas." This includes non-speech generating means such as the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), writing down thoughts, drawing pictures etc. as well as speech generating devices including using an iPad with voice output to communicate.

At MJ Kidz, we have highly trained and specialized staff performing AAC evaluations to determine optimal accessibility and features to meet the needs of our clients. Depending on the skills and abilities of our client, goals may incorporate AAC output only or adapt a total communication approach utilizing a combination of expressive modalities (e.g. voice, nonverbal communication, sign etc.).
